A far cry from cheesecake eating character in Natural Born Killers, Woody Harrelson has been eco and health conscious since a young age.

After cutting out red meat in his early twenties he discovered that he was lactose intolerant, and therefore made the decision to forgo dairy - which he accredits the clearing of his acne and other health problems caused by a build-up of mucus in the body. He now advocates a raw food diet for the supreme health of the body; “raw food is the best was to have the cleanest energy.”

Other celebrities such as Demi Moore, Natalie Portman and Uma Thurman are advocates with a raw food diet, undoubtedly helping them secure a long career in the media industry with its supposedly anti-ageing qualities. However ‘raw food-ists’ do not just always adopt the diet for superficial reasons. Alicia Silverstone believes in the power of raw food so much that she calling on the US Government to promote her way of eating to combat the rise of obesity;

“On the American diet we’re not nourishing ourselves…we’re starving ourselves to obesity because we’re not filling ourselves with the things we need.”

From changing her diet to a raw one she says that as well as her hair, skin and body looking better, the health of her mind has improved dramatically;

“You feel so much better and it changes your whole life…I feel lighter in the world and I’m just happier.”

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic dominated the whole tennis world in 2011, winning Wimbledon as well as the American Open with his unrelenting energy and steely determination, and from July 2011 was ranked number one. However it is not just hard training which he attributes his success… After discovering he has coeliac disease (gluten intolerance) he began a diet without wheat, barley or rye. This diet completely opposes the traditional school of thought surrounding a diet for endurance – which typically teaches that large meals consisting of complex carbohydrates (such as pasta) before a match will ensure longevity and optimum performance.

Has Djokovic disproved these traditional thoughts? Andy Murray clearly thinks so. The Scot, inspired by his friend and rival Djokovic’s performance has adopted the gluten free diet and instead of heavy carbohydrates and chicken and steak for protein he has been eating “a lot more fish and vegetables”. Also, after replacing his usual snacks of chocolate with fruit such as apples and bananas Murray says he’s never felt better!

“It’s something that, now I know how I feel, I wish I had been doing it longer... I wake up at 7am now and feel great. Before I would wake up at 9.30 and feel terrible.”

Bill Clinton has adopted a mostly vegan diet after a heath scare due to the cogging of his arteries.

The former US president, who was well known for his love of junk food during his presidency, began researching dietary alternatives after a moderate diet did not stop cholesterolclogging his arteries after a bypass. Living almost solely on natural vegan foods which contain hardly any saturated fat (saturated fat being a huge contributing factor to the development of heart disease), he has not yet had another health scare and a by product of this clean living?
